For most of the population of the southern regions of Kyrgyzstan irrigated agriculture is the core organization of life and that’s why appropriate access to water for irrigation purposes is one of the most serious problems for rural people.
Weakest link in the agricultural sector is its infrastructure, namely irrigation systems that long dilapidated and in ruined conditions.
Correspondingly, access to water is restricted, creating thus a major obstacle for poor households in rural areas who cannot provide for themselves a sufficient level of food stocks.
Lack of water also prevents the development of agriculture, leaving it at the level of subsistence only and not in a basis for commercial gain.
On March 1, 2014 with the financial support of the European Union has started a 2-year project to promote the improvement of agricultural productivity and alleviate poverty in the most vulnerable rural communities in Osh region.
The project aims to complete the following tasks:
- Training on sustainable farming that will help to increase productivity and income, thus improve the living conditions;
- Strengthening of local information and technical capacity for the rational use of water resources in rural areas through the introduction of advanced water-saving irrigation techniques that allow greater control over the use of water, reduce water loss and to resolve conflicts between WUA and farmers because of water resources;
- Introduction of new agricultural processing technologies for higher revenues from the sale of processed agricultural products.
The project will be implemented in 8 local communities in the 4 districts of Osh region: Karasu, Uzgen, Aravan and Nookat.
The project is implemented by a consortium of the following organizations: Pro NGO! eV (Cologne, Germany), CTC (Corporate Technologies Center, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan) and Osh RAS (Rural Advisory Service, Osh, Kyrgyzstan).
